Practical Issues of Grace

The Harvest

Matt. 13:24-43, 47-50

The Strategy

1. Satan brought evil into the world through deception, causing mankind to sin against God. (the tares)

2. Jesus died to save sinners; entrusting those who are saved with the good news of salvation for the lost. (the wheat)

The Kingdom Develops

1. The tares which looked like wheat at first have fully developed into unrepentant sinners.

2. Some of the tares have become wheat through salvation. (the leaven effect)

3. Tares, that become wheat, are small at first (mustard seed) then they fully develop; growing larger and becoming a refuge for the others.

4. Some, who thought they were wheat, are proven to be tares by their unrepentant disobedience. Matt. 7:21-23

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’” Matthew 7:21-23 (NKJV)

The Harvest

Suddenly Jesus sends His angels to gather and sort both wheat and tares at the end of the age.

“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

Matthew 24:44 (NKJV)

Eternal Destiny

1. Those who did not choose Jesus Christ (the tares) will be gathered to a place of eternal torment.

2. Those who chose Jesus Christ (the wheat) will reside with Him and His Father in His forever kingdom.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 (NKJV) (emphasis added)

“The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” Revelation 20:10 (NKJV)

“And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:15 (NKJV)

The Main Idea

At the end of the age, wheat and tare will be separated and rewarded according to their faith, which is described by their choices:

  • Offend- Causing others to stumble (away from God)
  • Lawlessness- Rejecting God’s authority
  • Initial sin of disobeying God’s commands
  • (all have sinned)
  • Ultimate sin of rejecting Christ’s saving provision
  • Wicked- Destructive
  • Just- Innocent, righteous
  • No one is absolutely innocent
  • Declared innocent by faith in the blood of Christ
  • Shine- Faith that stands strong in a sinful, dark world

God’s Way

God, through the extravagant sacrifice of His Son; made a way for every sinner to find forgiveness and new life.

The ultimate insult against God is to reject His way of salvation; thinking we can find our own way according to our own goodness.

Hell is the final consequence of those who, not only disobey God, but reject His provision for salvation.

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’” John 14:6 (NKJV)

“And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.” 1 John 2:2 (NKJV)

“See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven,” Hebrews 12:25 (NKJV)

Application for the tares

Be ready-

Acknowledge your sin

Place your complete trust in Jesus’ provision

Understand that God’s patience reflects His desire that none should perish. But He won’t wait forever.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.”

2 Peter 3:9-10 (NKJV)

Application for the wheat

For the sake of the lost, take your place in the Kingdom.

Work with a sense of urgency.

Make the connection between your faith and your choices.
